The Silence Between Signatures

Silent Video; 12 minutes 45 seconds
A silent video of me writing a poem with my finger on palm. This poem was generated by artificial intelligence (AI), inspired by the Treaty of San Francisco, and revised by me (Taiwanese) to create a version that connects me.

The Treaty of San Francisco was a post-World War II peace treaty between several nations* and Japan. It shaped the dispute over Taiwan’s status, as Japan merely “renounced” its rights to Taiwan without specifying who holds sovereignty over the islands. The work renders the interweaving of collective and personal experiences (historical treaty that influence us to this day, AI that draws on collective data, and my interaction with both), reinforcing the present but opaque language, and the vessel for “our version of history,” my body.

It was shown in Serbia, then Yugoslavia—a country invited to the San Francisco conference but absent—yet another silence on purpose.
