A pseudo web page* of a print from rijksmuseum.nl**, where I modify its original title into “A Formosan is being buried alive.”
That print came from the imagination of a Dutch engraver and was published as a book illustration. It is one of the earliest visual depictions of Taiwan and one of the archives Taiwan doesn’t own. In 2011, its collector, the Rijksmuseum, released the digital image of the print into the public domain, making it accessible and usable to everyone.
The work suggests the history of people who lack technology is gradually buried, highlighting the power behind data controller—historian today—and the potential risks involved. Only when people know the “original” can they notice the deviation, a difficult condition to fulfill in automation world (for example, it’s common for the site to redirect based on user location, or personalized based on user preference). Meanwhile, even in the same “open” network, the number and type of links determine visibility (for example, there are millions of websites, but only a handful of them are clicked).
*This image came from the imagination of me (no actual web page was build), and printed in the publication as well.
**nl is the country-code top-level domain of the Netherlands while tw is Taiwan, whose ancient name is Formosa, was once colonized by the former.
