The Blue and the Black

A square image* contains an unpowered hard disk drive (HDD), its platter revealing a cyanotype magnetite. It exists in both digital and laser-printed versions.

HDDs record data on rapidly rotating platters via electromagnetic induction, while cyanotype captures the world through slow exposures. The work reflects on materiality, tracing the passage and latency of time: from malfunctioning equipment to classic cyanotype, to minerals formed over millennia. Dual versions explore the lifecycle of images, blurring the lines between image and medium. The digital version highlights the HDD’s both obsolete and timely state—while most personal computers now use faster solid-state drives (SSDs), cloud data centers still rely heavily on HDDs. The printed version materializes the digital image—using laser toner mixed with magnetite powder, echoing the operation of the HDD head—allowing it to naturally age and leave us.
