Kal

Scripted performance
Script: Two performers, of any appearance, age, or gender, stand close but without touching—one facing Mecca, the other with their back to it. Once the performance begins, they remain still, gazing into the distance, each sensing they have five minutes before quietly walking forward until they choose to stop.

Inspired by Adriana González Brun’s De la serie Tierra (2015), the work taps the potential for shifting perspectives and forging connections through body movement. Its title, Kal (कल), in Urdu can mean both “tomorrow” and “yesterday,” depending on the context. Through the dual meaning of the word and the dual direction of the action, it explores the dynamic tension or harmony between faith and modernization, as well as how people envision the future. The act of walking reflects the passage of time, while the scripted form suggests external controller and individual that still has agency.
