With the support of the Ministry of Culture of Cuba, the image displayed in Havana features HOLLYWORLD, a mashup of the Hollywood sign and the American flag, standing atop the world.
During the Spanish Age of Exploration, both Havana and Los Angeles were under Spanish rule, with the empire spreading its culture and religion through military force. Centuries later, Los Angeles, the heart of Hollywood, exports American culture and commodity fetishism globally through mass media. The work reflects how hegemony shifts across eras, from old-world hard power to modern soft power, presenting how it can be institutionalized to serve different ideological purposes, and how easily power, in any form, can mutate into a monster.
